Consciousness and Healing Initiative Sound Healing Study – Overview

The Consciousness and Healing Initiative (CHI) was formed in 2014 by Dr. Shamini Jain as a 501c3 non-profit to evolve the scientific understanding and practical application of diverse healing modalities. We bring together scientists, healing practitioners, and educators to develop rigorous research and practical education to bring evidence-based healing practices into healthcare and self-care.

The COVID pandemic gave us eye-opening data on the implications that such global disruptions can have on mental health. According to research by the World Health Organization, in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the global prevalence of anxiety and depression increased by nearly 25%. With the increase in global political tensions, economic disruptions, and climate change leading to ongoing and increased anxiety and depression, it is vital to unlock effective treatments that can be done individually and at scale.

During COVID, we examined the feasibility of delivering a sound healing intervention for clinical levels of anxiety. Results from this study (currently under review in a scientific, peer-reviewed healthcare journal) indicated that this sound healing therapy, which was delivered virtually, reduced anxiety substantially. Coupled with a large effect size, this suggests that this therapy may be scalable and effective to be delivered virtually for those who are struggling from anxiety and may not have access to in-person care.

As a next step, we intend to conduct a randomized controlled trial with this sound healing therapy, with purposeful recruitment and sampling of underserved communities, to provide an evidence-base for an easily accessible holistic care for anxiety in a diverse population. We will publish two peer-reviewed scientific papers describing the study and its impact and attend at least two leading conferences in healthcare to share the study results.

Evidence from this study will inform the next step, which will be to train people to administer this therapy within community settings – so that evidence-based holistic therapies may be rapidly deployed for community health. Evidence shared through peer-review journals will also help healthcare administrators integrate such therapies into clinic and hospital settings.
