Approximately 8.9 million Floridians are currently dealing with “forever chemicals” in their drinking water. Nearly 90 million Americans, including those in Florida, have been exposed to these toxic PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in their drinking water, according to updated federal data analyzed by the Environmental Working Group. PFAS have been found in 33% of the tested water systems, which cover areas serving over 3,000 people. This testing is part of a national effort to detect 29 PFAS compounds between now and 2026.

PFAS are notorious for their persistence, as they do not break down and can accumulate in the body. They pose significant health risks, including increased cancer risk, harm to fetal development, and reduced vaccine effectiveness.
